Elbow Arthritis
Elbow arthritis is wear or inflammation of the elbow joint. It follows injury, repeated heavy use or rheumatoid disease, and is much less common than arthritis of the hip or knee.

Sobre elbow arthritis
O que você precisa saber
Pain, stiffness, loss of straightening or bending and sometimes clicking or locking are the main features. Diagnosis involves examination and X-rays, with CT or MRI used for surgical planning, and blood tests if inflammatory arthritis is suspected. Symptoms typically progress slowly over years and can limit daily tasks like eating or washing.
Treatment begins with rest from aggravating activity, anti-inflammatory medicines, physiotherapy and sometimes corticosteroid injections. Arthroscopic clean-out removes bone spurs and loose bodies, and a joint release can improve movement. Elbow replacement is for severe pain in older or low-demand patients, particularly with inflammatory arthritis. Because elbow surgery is specialised, people sometimes seek an experienced surgeon abroad.
Avaliação pré-viagem
Exames que devem já estar prontos
- Elbow X-rays from the front and side, and CT scans if bone spurs or loose fragments are suspected.
- MRI or ultrasound reports if done, and nerve conduction tests if you have numbness in the little finger.
- Blood tests for inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid factor, anti-CCP and inflammatory markers, if relevant.
- A record of treatments tried: physiotherapy, injections, medicines and any previous elbow surgery or fracture.
- Range of motion measurements and notes on how the elbow limits daily tasks and work.
Segunda opinião
Quando buscar uma segunda avaliação
- Total elbow replacement has been suggested but you are younger or heavy-use work makes weight restrictions a concern.
- You have been advised to have surgery but not tried injections, therapy or arthroscopic debridement.
- You have inflammatory arthritis and the options for medicine and surgery have not been reviewed together.
- You have pain with pins and needles in the ring and little fingers, suggesting ulnar nerve involvement.

Perguntas para fazer
- What type of arthritis do I have, and what is causing it?
- Which option fits my age and activity: arthroscopic clean-out, interposition, or replacement?
- What lifting limits apply after an elbow replacement, and how long does it last?
- What are the risks of infection, loosening and nerve injury?
- Will I regain a full arc of movement, and what therapy is needed?
- What happens if I choose to wait?
Perspectiva
Prognóstico realista
Elbow arthritis causes slowly progressive pain and stiffness, and many people cope with therapy and injections for years. Arthroscopic clean-out can improve motion and pain for some. Total elbow replacement relieves pain and improves function well, but implants have lifting restrictions and a shorter lifespan than hip or knee replacements, so it is mostly reserved for older or lower-demand patients or rheumatoid disease.

Do I need an elbow replacement?
Not necessarily. Many people manage with therapy, injections or an arthroscopic clean-out. Replacement is considered for severe pain and loss of function that other treatments do not help.
How long does an elbow replacement last?
Elbow implants generally last less long than hip or knee replacements, particularly in active people, and come with lifting restrictions. Your surgeon can advise on your likely lifespan.
Can elbow arthritis be treated without surgery?
Yes in many cases: activity changes, splinting, physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory medicines and injections. Inflammatory arthritis also needs disease-modifying medicine.
Clinical context
Working up elbow arthritis properly
A condition like elbow arthritis is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a ortopedia specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.
Diagnostic workup, in sequence
- First-line clinical assessment
History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or ortopedia specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.
- Standard imaging + labs
Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.
- Specialist diagnostic workup
Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.
- Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)
Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.
When to escalate to specialist review
- New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
- Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
- Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
- A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.
Before you book international travel
- Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
- Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
- Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
- Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
- Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
