Deviated Nasal Septum
A deviated nasal septum means the wall of cartilage and bone between the nostrils is bent to one side. It is very common and many people have no symptoms, though it can narrow one side of the nose.

Sobre deviated nasal septum
O que você precisa saber
A blocked nose on one side, snoring, repeated nosebleeds, facial pressure and recurring sinus infections are the main complaints. An ENT specialist diagnoses it by looking inside the nose with a light or a small endoscope, and CT is used only if sinus disease is suspected. A deviation is lifelong and does not correct itself, but it only needs treatment if it causes problems.
First-line care is medical: saline rinses and steroid nasal sprays, plus treatment of allergy. If obstruction persists, septoplasty straightens or trims the septum through the nostrils, usually under general anaesthetic as a day case. Recovery takes one to two weeks for daily life. Septoplasty is routine, so travelling abroad for it is generally a matter of convenience rather than necessity.
Avaliação pré-viagem
Exames que devem já estar prontos
- Nasal endoscopy or clinical examination report describing the deviation and any spur, plus the state of the turbinates.
- CT scan of the sinuses if you have had one, which is usually requested if sinus infections are part of the problem.
- A record of medical treatment tried, such as steroid nasal sprays and antihistamines, and for how long.
- Allergy test results and a note of any asthma or nasal polyps.
- Your account of nasal injuries, previous nose surgery, nosebleeds and snoring or sleep apnoea symptoms.
Segunda opinião
Quando buscar uma segunda avaliação
- Surgery has been advised but you have not had a proper trial of nasal spray treatment or allergy assessment.
- You also want the nose reshaped and the surgeon has not discussed the combined septorhinoplasty approach.
- You have had nose surgery before and still cannot breathe through one side.
- The deviation is mild on examination but your symptoms are severe, which may point to another cause such as swollen turbinates.

Perguntas para fazer
- Is my blockage caused by the septum, the turbinates, allergy, or a combination?
- What will septoplasty change, and what are the chances it fully clears my breathing?
- Do I need turbinate reduction or sinus surgery as well?
- Will the outside shape of my nose change?
- What are the risks, such as septal perforation, bleeding or numbness of the upper teeth?
- How long until I can fly, exercise and return to work?
Perspectiva
Prognóstico realista
Septoplasty improves nasal breathing in most people with a clearly obstructing deviation, and the improvement is generally lasting. Results are less predictable if the blockage is partly due to allergy or enlarged turbinates, so these need to be treated too. Swelling takes several weeks to settle and the final airflow is judged after a few months. Serious complications are uncommon.

Does a crooked septum always need surgery?
No. Many people have some deviation without symptoms. Surgery is for those with persistent blockage, nosebleeds or sinus problems that do not improve with medicines.
Will septoplasty change the look of my nose?
Septoplasty works on the inside of the nose and does not normally change its outside shape. Reshaping the outside is a different procedure, septorhinoplasty.
Can the septum become crooked again?
Significant recurrence is uncommon, but the cartilage can move slightly while healing. A new injury can also bend it again.
Clinical context
Working up deviated nasal septum properly
A condition like deviated nasal septum is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a otorrinolaringologia specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.
Diagnostic workup, in sequence
- First-line clinical assessment
History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or otorrinolaringologia specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.
- Standard imaging + labs
Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.
- Specialist diagnostic workup
Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.
- Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)
Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.
When to escalate to specialist review
- New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
- Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
- Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
- A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.
Before you book international travel
- Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
- Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
- Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
- Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
- Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
