Sobre parotid gland tumour (benign)
O que você precisa saber
The usual sign is a slow-growing, painless lump near the ear or angle of the jaw. Pain, rapid growth or facial weakness make a cancer more likely and need prompt assessment. Diagnosis is by ultrasound, MRI and fine-needle biopsy. Pleomorphic adenomas keep growing and have a small chance of turning malignant over many years, whereas Warthin tumours rarely do.
Pleomorphic adenomas are removed surgically, normally by superficial parotidectomy, in which the gland tissue above the facial nerve is taken out while the nerve is preserved. Warthin tumours may be watched if the person prefers or is unfit for surgery. Temporary facial weakness can follow surgery, and recurrence is uncommon with complete removal. Travelling abroad is generally for access to an experienced head and neck surgeon.
Avaliação pré-viagem
Exames que devem já estar prontos
- Ultrasound and, if available, MRI of the parotid showing the lump's size, position and relation to the deep part of the gland.
- Fine-needle aspiration or core biopsy results identifying the tumour type.
- A clear note of any facial weakness, numbness or pain before treatment, since these may suggest a more serious cause.
- Previous imaging or operative reports if the lump was removed before and has returned.
- A list of medicines, especially blood thinners, and your smoking history, which is linked to Warthin tumour.
Segunda opinião
Quando buscar uma segunda avaliação
- The biopsy result is inconclusive, or the lump is growing quickly, hard or painful, which can suggest malignancy.
- You have facial weakness, which is unusual with a benign tumour, and no explanation has been given.
- The tumour has recurred after earlier surgery, which is more complex because of scar tissue.
- You are being advised to remove the whole gland when a smaller superficial operation might be adequate, or the reverse.

Perguntas para fazer
- What type of tumour do I have, and is it definitely benign?
- Does it need removal, or can a Warthin tumour be watched?
- Which operation is planned, and is facial nerve monitoring used during surgery?
- What is the risk of temporary or permanent facial weakness?
- What is the chance of the tumour returning, and what follow-up is needed?
- Will there be numbness near the ear or sweating on the cheek afterwards?
Perspectiva
Prognóstico realista
Benign parotid tumours have an excellent outlook once completely removed. Pleomorphic adenomas can recur if tumour cells are left behind, and rarely change into cancer if neglected for many years, so complete removal with a margin is advised. Warthin tumours seldom recur and are sometimes simply observed. Temporary facial weakness is fairly common after surgery and usually recovers over weeks to months; permanent weakness is uncommon. Numbness around the ear and Frey syndrome, sweating while eating, can occur. Results depend on tumour type, size and depth.

Does a benign parotid tumour have to be removed?
Pleomorphic adenomas are usually removed because they keep growing and can rarely turn malignant. Warthin tumours, especially in older patients, may sometimes be watched.
Will my face be paralysed after surgery?
Permanent paralysis is uncommon. Temporary weakness of part of the face is more common and usually recovers over weeks to months. Nerve monitoring during surgery helps protect the nerve.
Can the tumour return?
Pleomorphic adenomas can recur years later if cells remain, which is why complete removal with a margin matters. Warthin tumours rarely recur.
How long is the hospital stay?
Often one to two nights with a small drain. You will have a scar hidden in the natural crease in front of the ear.
Clinical context
Working up parotid gland tumour (benign) properly
A condition like parotid gland tumour (benign) is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a otorrinolaringologia specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.
Diagnostic workup, in sequence
- First-line clinical assessment
History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or otorrinolaringologia specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.
- Standard imaging + labs
Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.
- Specialist diagnostic workup
Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.
- Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)
Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.
When to escalate to specialist review
- New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
- Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
- Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
- A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.
Before you book international travel
- Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
- Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
- Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
- Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
- Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
