Cardiac Tumour (Atrial Myxoma)
An atrial myxoma is a benign tumour, usually growing in the left atrium on a stalk. It can block blood flow through the heart or release fragments that cause stroke.

Sobre cardiac tumour (atrial myxoma)
O que você precisa saber
Symptoms include breathlessness, fainting, fever, weight loss and sometimes signs of embolism such as stroke or limb ischaemia. A murmur may change with position. Echocardiography usually makes the diagnosis, and CT or MRI shows the attachment and size. Because the tumour can fragment, it is treated as urgent once found.
The standard treatment is open heart surgery to remove the tumour with its stalk and a margin of the atrial wall, usually using a heart-lung machine. Results are generally excellent, and the tumour rarely recurs, but follow-up echocardiograms are advised, especially in familial forms. No medicine dissolves the tumour, so surgery should not be delayed.
Avaliação pré-viagem
Exames que devem já estar prontos
- Echocardiogram showing the size, attachment and mobility of the tumour, with video clips if available.
- Cardiac MRI or CT, which helps confirm that it is a myxoma and plan the resection.
- Coronary angiography or CT coronary scan, usually requested before heart surgery in older patients.
- Brain imaging and neurology notes if there have been strokes or transient attacks.
- Family history, and the history of Carney complex or multiple tumours, which suggests an inherited syndrome.
Segunda opinião
Quando buscar uma segunda avaliação
- The tumour is mobile and you have been told to wait, although embolic risk makes timely removal the standard.
- More than one tumour or an unusual location raises concern for Carney complex.
- You have had a stroke and want to know the best timing for heart surgery.
- The mass may not be a myxoma, for example a clot or other tumour, and the diagnosis needs confirming.
Conversando com seu médico
Perguntas para fazer
- Is this definitely a myxoma, and how large is it?
- Why is surgery recommended soon, and what are the risks of delay?
- Has it already caused any emboli to the brain or other organs?
- Could it be part of an inherited syndrome, and should my family be screened?
- How often could it recur, and what follow-up scanning is needed?
- What is the recovery after open-heart surgery?
Perspectiva
Prognóstico realista
Surgical removal of an atrial myxoma is usually curative, and most patients recover well and return to normal life. Recurrence is uncommon, though more frequent in inherited forms, so periodic echocardiograms are advised. The main risk before surgery is embolism, which is why removal is not delayed. Outcome depends on the patient's general health and any damage already caused by emboli.

Does a myxoma have to be removed?
Yes, in nearly all cases, because it can block the heart valve or send fragments to the brain and other organs.
Is it cancer?
No, a myxoma is a benign tumour, although its position makes it dangerous. The removed tissue is examined to confirm the diagnosis.
Can it come back?
Occasionally, mainly in inherited forms or with incomplete removal, so periodic echocardiograms are advised for years.
Clinical context
Working up cardiac tumour (atrial myxoma) properly
A condition like cardiac tumour (atrial myxoma) is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a cirurgia cardíaca specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.
Diagnostic workup, in sequence
- First-line clinical assessment
History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or cirurgia cardíaca specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.
- Standard imaging + labs
Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.
- Specialist diagnostic workup
Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.
- Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)
Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.
When to escalate to specialist review
- New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
- Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
- Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
- A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.
Before you book international travel
- Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
- Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
- Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
- Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
- Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
