TURP / HoLEP (Prostat) hakkında

With TURP, the surgeon cuts the prostate away in small chips using a loop and electrical current. With HoLEP, a holmium laser separates whole lobes of tissue from the capsule, and they are broken up and removed. Spinal or general anaesthesia is used for both. TURP suits small to medium glands, whereas HoLEP can treat glands of any size.

Both give a lasting improvement in flow. Outcomes depend on the gland size, bladder function and surgeon experience. HoLEP generally means less bleeding, a shorter catheter time in many centres and a lower rate of retreatment, but it needs a skilled surgeon. Dry ejaculation is common after both, and temporary urgency or leakage can occur.

Plan for a stay of one to three nights and a few days near the hospital after the catheter is out. Avoid heavy lifting and long travel for a couple of weeks. Bring your PSA, flow test results and medicine list, especially blood thinners, and arrange a urologist at home for review once healing is complete.

  • Urinary retention, bladder stones, infections or kidney strain related to the prostate.
  • A man who wants lasting relief; HoLEP is also an option for larger glands.

  1. Bring your PSA, prostate ultrasound or MRI, flow test and urine culture; infection should be cleared first.
  2. Tell your doctor about blood thinners, aspirin and other medicines; changes only on the doctor's instruction.
  3. Expect blood tests and an anaesthetic review.
  4. Discuss dry ejaculation, leakage and repeat surgery chance before choosing a technique.
  5. Follow fasting instructions and plan a few days in hospital.
