Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome

Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome is a heart condition in which an extra electrical pathway lets signals bypass the normal route. It is present from birth and can cause episodes of very fast heart rhythm in young people.

wolff-parkinson-white syndrome hakkında

Bilinmesi gerekenler

Many people have no symptoms and the pattern is picked up on an electrocardiogram. Others have sudden palpitations, dizziness or breathlessness, and rarely a dangerous rhythm in atrial fibrillation. Diagnosis uses ECG, monitoring and sometimes an electrophysiology study to map the pathway and judge the risk of dangerous rhythms.

People without symptoms and with low-risk pathways may only be observed. Episodes can be stopped by vagal manoeuvres or medicines, and some people use long-term antiarrhythmic drugs. Catheter ablation destroys the extra pathway and cures most patients, so is often recommended in those with symptoms or higher risk. It is a day or overnight procedure.

Yolculuk öncesi tetkikler

Önceden tamamlanmış olması gereken testler

  • A resting 12-lead ECG showing the delta wave, and ECGs recorded during episodes of fast heartbeat.
  • Holter or event monitor reports, and echocardiogram results to check that the heart structure is normal.
  • Exercise test or electrophysiology study reports, if done, which help to judge the risk of the pathway.
  • A record of episodes, including how fast the heart beat, any fainting, and any episodes of atrial fibrillation.
  • A list of heart medicines tried, with doses and responses, and any family history of sudden death.

İkinci görüş

Ne zaman ikinci görüş alınmalı

  • You have been told to take medicines for life and ablation has not been discussed, especially if you are young.
  • You have fainted or had a very fast rhythm with an irregular heartbeat, which needs prompt specialist assessment.
  • You have no symptoms and are unsure whether a risk assessment or ablation is worthwhile.
  • You have been advised to have ablation but the diagnosis relies on a single unclear ECG.

Doktorunuzla konuşurken

Sorulacak sorular

  1. Is my pathway low-risk or high-risk for dangerous rhythms?
  2. Do I need treatment, or can I safely be monitored if I have no symptoms?
  3. What is the chance that ablation will cure the problem, and what are the risks?
  4. Which medicines should I avoid if I have this condition?
  5. What should I do during a rapid heartbeat episode?
  6. Are there restrictions on sport or work, and what follow-up is required?

Prognoz

Gerçekçi prognoz

Most people with WPW live normal lives. Catheter ablation of the extra pathway cures the problem in most people, with success rates generally high and a low risk of serious complications at experienced centres. Rarely, an atrial arrhythmia conducts very fast through the pathway and can be dangerous, which is why risk assessment matters. Some people need a repeat procedure. Medicines can control episodes but do not remove the pathway.

  2. Önce yerel bir kalp cerrahisi uzmanına gidin

Evde yüz yüze klinik muayene — tek bir konsültasyon bile — düşük maliyetli ve destinasyon planını önemli ölçüde iyileştirir. Yanınıza alın: yazılı klinik değerlendirme, önerilen prosedür, cerrahi risk sınıfı ve varsa kontrendikasyonlar.

  3. Ücretsiz ikinci görüş için dosyayı bize gönderin

Tıbbi panelimizden iki cerrah değerlendirmeyi bağımsız olarak inceler. Ameliyat mı yapacaklarını, izleme mi alacaklarını, yoksa yönlendireceklerini mi söylerler — seyahate karşı tavsiyeleri bile olsa.

Is WPW dangerous?

Often not, but in some people the pathway can conduct dangerously fast rhythms.

Can ablation cure it?

In most people, yes, with high success rates.

Can I exercise?

Many can after assessment. Discuss sport with your cardiologist.

Can I fly with WPW?

Yes if well controlled. Carry your ECG and medicines.

Clinical context

Working up wolff-parkinson-white syndrome properly

A condition like wolff-parkinson-white syndrome is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a kalp cerrahisi specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or kalp cerrahisi specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
