Ureteric Stones

Ureteric stones are hard mineral deposits that lodge in the ureter, the tube carrying urine from kidney to bladder. They usually cause sudden, severe colicky pain and are most common in adults aged 20 to 60.

ureteric stones hakkında

Bilinmesi gerekenler

Typical symptoms are loin pain that spreads to the groin, blood in the urine, nausea and urgency. Diagnosis is by low-dose CT scan or ultrasound with urine tests. Many smaller stones pass by themselves within weeks, but a stone that blocks the kidney, or comes with fever or infection, needs prompt treatment.

Small stones are managed with pain relief, plenty of fluids and sometimes tamsulosin to help passage. Stones that fail to pass, cause infection or are large are treated by shock wave lithotripsy or ureteroscopy with laser fragmentation, sometimes with a temporary stent. Treatment abroad is occasionally considered for planned stone surgery, never for emergencies.

Yolculuk öncesi tetkikler

Önceden tamamlanmış olması gereken testler

  • A non-contrast CT KUB or ultrasound report with the stone size, position and degree of kidney swelling.
  • Urine tests, including urine culture, to show whether there is infection before any procedure.
  • Blood tests for kidney function (creatinine), calcium and uric acid.
  • Any stone analysis from earlier stones, and a summary of previous stone episodes and procedures.
  • A list of medicines, especially blood thinners, as they may need to be adjusted around a procedure.

İkinci görüş

Ne zaman ikinci görüş alınmalı

  • You have fever with a blocked kidney, which needs urgent treatment rather than waiting.
  • You have been told to wait for a stone to pass but pain persists for weeks or the kidney is swelling.
  • You have repeated stones and have never had the cause investigated.
  • You have only one working kidney, kidney impairment, or are pregnant, and the safest option is unclear.

Doktorunuzla konuşurken

Sorulacak sorular

  1. How big is the stone and where exactly is it, and is it likely to pass by itself?
  2. Is ureteroscopy or shock wave treatment better for this stone, and why?
  3. Will I need a temporary stent, and how will it feel?
  4. How can I prevent more stones, and should my stone be analysed?
  5. Is there any sign of infection or kidney damage that changes the urgency?
  6. What symptoms would make me seek emergency care while I wait?

Prognoz

Gerçekçi prognoz

Small ureteric stones, particularly under about 5 mm, often pass on their own, while larger stones usually need a procedure. Ureteroscopy and shock wave treatment both clear most stones, though the success rate depends on stone size, position and hardness. Recurrence is common, and a large share of people form another stone within several years, so drinking enough fluid and addressing the underlying cause matter. Infection with blockage is the main danger and needs prompt drainage.

  2. Önce yerel bir üroloji uzmanına gidin

Evde yüz yüze klinik muayene — tek bir konsültasyon bile — düşük maliyetli ve destinasyon planını önemli ölçüde iyileştirir. Yanınıza alın: yazılı klinik değerlendirme, önerilen prosedür, cerrahi risk sınıfı ve varsa kontrendikasyonlar.

  3. Ücretsiz ikinci görüş için dosyayı bize gönderin

Tıbbi panelimizden iki cerrah değerlendirmeyi bağımsız olarak inceler. Ameliyat mı yapacaklarını, izleme mi alacaklarını, yoksa yönlendireceklerini mi söylerler — seyahate karşı tavsiyeleri bile olsa.

Will my stone pass on its own?

Small stones, especially under about 5 mm, often do, usually within a few weeks. Larger stones, or stones with infection or severe pain, usually need a procedure. Your scan helps estimate the chance.

What is the difference between ureteroscopy and shock wave treatment?

Ureteroscopy uses a thin telescope passed through the bladder to remove or break the stone. Shock wave treatment uses external waves to break it into fragments that pass in the urine. Choice depends on stone size, position and hardness.

Will I need a stent?

Often after ureteroscopy a temporary stent is left to keep the ureter open. It can cause urgency and discomfort and is usually removed after days or weeks.

Can I fly with a ureteric stone?

Flying is usually safe from a medical point of view, but pain or a blocked, infected kidney can become serious far from care. Get advice first, especially if you have fever or severe pain.

Clinical context

Working up ureteric stones properly

A condition like ureteric stones is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a üroloji specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or üroloji specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
