penile cancer hakkında

Bilinmesi gerekenler

The first sign is often a persistent sore, lump, rash or discharge under the foreskin, sometimes with bleeding or an odour. Diagnosis needs a biopsy, with examination and imaging to check the groin lymph nodes, which is the main route of spread. Early diagnosis allows treatment that preserves the penis.

Small cancers can be treated by topical treatment, laser, circumcision, or glans resurfacing, with partial or total penectomy for larger tumours. Groin lymph node assessment by sentinel biopsy or dissection is key. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are used for advanced disease. Reconstruction and psychological support are important. Treatment abroad is mostly sought for organ-preserving surgery at specialist centres.

Yolculuk öncesi tetkikler

Önceden tamamlanmış olması gereken testler

  • Biopsy pathology report with tumour type, grade, depth of invasion and whether blood or lymph vessels are involved.
  • Clinical photographs and examination notes recording the lesion size, position and whether the groin nodes can be felt.
  • MRI of the penis (sometimes after an artificial erection) and CT or PET-CT of groin, pelvis and chest for staging.
  • Ultrasound or biopsy of enlarged groin lymph nodes, if present.
  • HPV, HIV and diabetes status where tested, and a smoking and circumcision history.

İkinci görüş

Ne zaman ikinci görüş alınmalı

  • You are advised to have an amputation without having been offered penis-sparing treatment, where the tumour allows.
  • The groin lymph nodes have not been assessed or sampled, even though the tumour is invasive.
  • Staging scans are missing or incomplete.
  • The cancer has returned after surgery, or the nodes are involved, and combination treatment has not been discussed.

Doktorunuzla konuşurken

Sorulacak sorular

  1. What is the stage and grade of my cancer?
  2. Can the penis be preserved, and what are the options?
  3. How will my groin lymph nodes be assessed?
  4. What are the effects on urination, sexual function and appearance?
  5. Do I need chemotherapy or radiotherapy as well?
  6. What follow-up is needed and for how long?

Prognoz

Gerçekçi prognoz

Outlook depends mainly on stage and whether groin lymph nodes are involved. Early, localised cancers treated promptly are often cured, with high long-term survival. When cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, outcome is worse and combination treatment is used. Delaying a visit is a common problem. Outcome depends on tumour depth and grade, node status, complete removal and regular follow-up, since recurrences usually appear within the first two to three years.

  2. Önce yerel bir onkoloji uzmanına gidin

Evde yüz yüze klinik muayene — tek bir konsültasyon bile — düşük maliyetli ve destinasyon planını önemli ölçüde iyileştirir. Yanınıza alın: yazılı klinik değerlendirme, önerilen prosedür, cerrahi risk sınıfı ve varsa kontrendikasyonlar.

  3. Ücretsiz ikinci görüş için dosyayı bize gönderin

Tıbbi panelimizden iki cerrah değerlendirmeyi bağımsız olarak inceler. Ameliyat mı yapacaklarını, izleme mi alacaklarını, yoksa yönlendireceklerini mi söylerler — seyahate karşı tavsiyeleri bile olsa.

Is penile cancer curable?

Yes, particularly when found early. Cure rates are high for small, localised tumours.

Will I lose my penis?

Not necessarily. Penis-sparing techniques are used for suitable early tumours, and larger tumours may need partial removal.

Is it linked to HPV?

Many cases are, and smoking and poor hygiene or chronic foreskin problems also raise risk.

Why do the groin nodes matter?

They are the first place the cancer typically spreads, and their status strongly affects treatment and outlook.

Clinical context

Working up penile cancer properly

A condition like penile cancer is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a onkoloji specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or onkoloji specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate urgently

  • Acute worsening of established symptoms — sudden chest pain, shortness of breath at rest, neurological deficit, severe bleeding, persistent high fever.
  • Loss of consciousness, severe persistent vomiting, or any focal neurological event.
  • Symptoms in the early hours of onset that fit a time-sensitive treatment window (stroke, MI, sepsis) — every hour costs outcome.
  • If you are travelling internationally for treatment and develop these symptoms in transit, divert to the nearest emergency department; do not wait to reach the planned destination.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
