Using a console, the surgeon operates robotic arms that hold a magnified 3D camera and fine instruments. The prostate and seminal vesicles are removed, sometimes with pelvic lymph nodes, and the bladder is joined to the urethra. Nerves that control erections may be spared when the cancer allows. A catheter remains in place for about one to two weeks.
Cancer control depends on the grade and stage, PSA level, margin status and surgeon experience. Urinary leakage is common at first and improves over months with pelvic floor exercises, while erectile function varies with age, baseline function and whether the nerves could be spared. PSA is checked after surgery to monitor for recurrence.
Hospital stay is usually one to three days, and you will go home with a catheter, so plan to stay near the hospital until it is removed. Avoid heavy lifting for around six weeks. Bring MRI, biopsy and PSA results, and arrange PSA tests, pelvic floor physiotherapy and follow-up with your urologist at home.

- Bring biopsy results, PSA, prostate MRI and any bone or PSMA scans so staging and nerve sparing can be planned.
- Ask your doctor about adjusting blood thinners, diabetes and blood pressure medicines before surgery.
- Start pelvic floor exercises before surgery, taught by a physiotherapist, to help urinary control.
- Discuss erectile function, fertility and sperm storage before the operation.
- Plan to remain near the hospital until the catheter is removed and you are cleared to fly.
