Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon removes small pieces of bone and swollen or polyp tissue to open the natural drainage channels of the sinuses. There are no skin cuts, and image-guidance can help in complex cases. Depending on the disease, the surgery may involve the maxillary, ethmoid, frontal or sphenoid sinuses, and may be combined with septum surgery for better access.

Symptoms such as congestion, facial pressure and discharge usually improve, though polyps and allergic disease can recur. Results depend on the diagnosis, how extensive the surgery was, the surgeon's experience and diligent use of rinses and sprays afterwards. Serious complications, including eye or skull base injury, are rare. A follow-up endoscopy shows how well the sinuses are healing.

A short hospital stay of up to a day is usual, with around two weeks to feel back to normal. Plan to remain nearby for the first few days and arrange sinus rinses, prescribed sprays and rest. Bring your CT scan, and organise review with an ENT doctor at home for cleaning of the sinus cavities.

  1. Bring CT scans, allergy test results and records of previous sinus treatment.
  2. Discuss aspirin sensitivity, asthma, blood thinners and other medicines; any change is on your doctor's instruction.
  3. Fast as instructed for general anaesthesia and buy saline rinse bottles beforehand.
  4. Ask when you may fly, as pressure changes can be uncomfortable early on.
