Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon makes a cut behind the ear, opens the mastoid bone and places an electrode array into the cochlea, with a receiver secured beneath the skin. The external sound processor is fitted about three to four weeks later, once healing is complete, and then programmed over several sessions. Pre-operative hearing tests, CT or MRI scans decide suitability.

Many recipients understand speech much better, though the result varies. It depends on how long hearing has been lost, age at implantation, the health of the hearing nerve and, importantly, rehabilitation and practice afterwards. Children implanted early often develop spoken language well. Risks include infection, dizziness, taste change and, rarely, device failure needing revision.

Plan to stay a few days for the surgery, then return, or have a local team ready, for activation and programming around a month later. Bring hearing tests and scans. Ongoing mapping, therapy, batteries and processor upgrades are part of life with an implant, so ask who will provide them where you live.

  3. Tell the team about medicines and allergies; follow fasting instructions for general anaesthesia.
  4. Plan to stay for the switch-on and programming, and arrange rehabilitation after returning home.
