Vertebral Compression Fracture

A vertebral compression fracture is a collapse of part of a spine bone, most often caused by osteoporosis. It mainly affects older adults, especially postmenopausal women, and can follow a minor fall or occur with no clear injury.

О vertebral compression fracture

Typical symptoms are sudden back pain, worse on standing or moving, sometimes with loss of height and a stooped posture. X-rays show the fracture and MRI can confirm that it is recent. Pain usually settles over weeks to months, but fractures may lead to chronic pain and further fractures.

Initial care is pain relief, a short period of activity adjusted to comfort, physiotherapy and treatment of osteoporosis with calcium, vitamin D and bone-strengthening drugs. When severe pain persists, vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty, in which cement is injected into the bone, may be offered. Patients occasionally consider these day procedures abroad.

  • Spine X-rays and MRI reports with images, since MRI shows whether the fracture is recent and any pressure on nerves.
  • A bone density (DEXA) scan report, if available.
  • Blood tests for calcium, vitamin D, kidney function and, where relevant, tests for myeloma.
  • A history of any cancer, long-term steroid use or previous fractures.
  • A list of medicines, including bone-strengthening drugs and blood thinners, and a record of your pain levels over time.

  • You have been advised to have cement injection but the fracture is several months old or your pain is already settling.
  • The fracture happened with a minor injury and the cause, such as osteoporosis or cancer, has not been investigated.
  • You have leg weakness, numbness or bladder changes, which need urgent assessment.
  • You have multiple fractures and are unsure about the best way to protect the remaining spine.

  1. Is the fracture recent, and is it caused by osteoporosis or something else?
  2. Would pain relief, a brace and time be enough in my case?
  3. Which procedure do you advise, kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty, and why?
  4. What are the risks, including cement leakage and further fractures?
  5. What treatment will protect my bones from future fractures?
  6. What activity limits should I follow, and when can I travel home?

Many compression fractures heal over weeks to months with pain relief and gradual activity. For people with severe pain not improving, cement procedures can provide quick relief in many cases. The key to the long-term outlook is treating the underlying bone weakness, because one fracture raises the risk of others. Outcomes depend on age, bone density, number of fractures and general health. Cancer-related fractures have a different outlook and plan.

Do I need an operation?

Often not. Many fractures heal with pain relief, bracing and activity. Cement procedures are considered for severe, persistent pain.

How soon do kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty relieve pain?

Many people notice relief within days. Results are best for recent fractures.

Will I have more fractures?

Risk is higher after one fracture, which is why osteoporosis treatment matters.

Can I fly after the procedure?

Usually within days if pain allows, but follow your doctor's advice.

Clinical context

Working up vertebral compression fracture properly

A condition like vertebral compression fracture is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a ортопедия specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or ортопедия specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
