Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the muscle wall of the womb. They are very common in women of reproductive age and are often found by chance, though some cause troublesome symptoms.

Fibroids may cause heavy or prolonged periods, anaemia, pelvic pressure, frequent urination, pain and sometimes difficulty conceiving. Diagnosis is by pelvic examination and ultrasound, with MRI for complex cases. They usually grow slowly during the reproductive years and often shrink after menopause, and cancer change is very rare.

Fibroids without symptoms need only monitoring. Symptoms may be eased with tranexamic acid, hormonal treatments or a hormonal coil. Procedures include uterine artery embolisation, myomectomy to remove fibroids and keep the womb, and hysterectomy when childbearing is complete. Keyhole and robotic surgery are often explored abroad for quicker recovery.

  • A pelvic ultrasound or MRI report listing the number, size and position of the fibroids, including any that bulge into the womb cavity.
  • A full blood count and ferritin, because heavy bleeding commonly causes anaemia.
  • A recent cervical screening result, and an endometrial assessment if you have irregular or very heavy bleeding.
  • Details of your plans for pregnancy, your age and previous pregnancies, since these shape which operation is suitable.
  • A record of medicines or hormonal treatments you have tried and how they worked.

  • You have been told you need a hysterectomy but you wish to keep your womb or may want children.
  • Fibroids are growing quickly or are growing after menopause, which needs careful assessment.
  • You have fertility difficulty and are unsure whether fibroids are the cause.
  • Surgeons differ on whether myomectomy can be done by keyhole surgery, or whether embolisation or medicines would be an alternative.

  1. How many fibroids do I have, how big are they and where are they?
  2. Are my symptoms and any fertility problems likely to be caused by them?
  3. What are the choices that keep my womb, and are they suitable for me?
  4. What is the chance that fibroids will grow back after myomectomy?
  5. If I need a hysterectomy, will my ovaries be kept?
  6. How soon can I try to conceive after surgery, and will I need a caesarean delivery?

Fibroids are benign and rarely become cancerous. They often shrink after menopause, and many cause no symptoms. When treatment is needed, myomectomy relieves symptoms in most women but fibroids can return, particularly in younger women with multiple fibroids. Hysterectomy removes the problem completely but ends fertility. Outcomes depend on fibroid size, number and position, your age and your plans for pregnancy.

Do fibroids always need treatment?

No. Fibroids without symptoms usually need only observation. Treatment is considered for heavy bleeding, pain, pressure symptoms, anaemia or fertility problems.

Can fibroids come back after myomectomy?

Yes. New fibroids can form, especially if you are young or had many. A hysterectomy removes the risk completely but ends the possibility of pregnancy.

Do fibroids turn into cancer?

Very rarely. Fibroids are benign, but fast growth, especially after menopause, should be assessed carefully.

Can I get pregnant after myomectomy?

Many women do. Your surgeon usually advises waiting a few months and may recommend a caesarean delivery if the womb wall was deeply cut.

Clinical context

Working up миома матки properly

A condition like миома матки is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a гинекология specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or гинекология specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
