Umbilical Hernia

An umbilical hernia is a bulge at the navel where fat or bowel pushes through a weak point in the abdominal wall. It affects babies, and in adults it is often linked to pregnancy, excess weight or repeated straining.

О umbilical hernia

The main sign is a soft swelling near the belly button that becomes more obvious on coughing or standing, sometimes with a dull ache. It is diagnosed by examination, with ultrasound if the diagnosis is unclear. Adult hernias do not heal on their own and tend to enlarge slowly; sudden severe pain, vomiting or a hard, tender lump needs urgent care.

Small hernias without symptoms can be watched. Repair is advised when there is pain, enlargement or a risk of trapped bowel, and is a short operation done by open or keyhole technique, usually with a mesh to reduce recurrence. Recovery is quick, and people sometimes travel abroad for planned repair when local waiting is long.

  • Any ultrasound or CT report describing the size of the defect and what it contains, such as fat or bowel.
  • A record of when the bulge appeared, how it has changed, and any episodes of pain, hardness or being unable to push it back.
  • Details of previous abdominal operations, since earlier scars can affect how the repair is planned.
  • A list of medicines, especially blood thinners, and any history of diabetes, smoking or lung disease that affects healing.
  • Routine pre-operative blood tests and a recent ECG if you are over 50 or have heart conditions.

  • You have been told you need urgent surgery but the hernia is painless and easily pushed back in.
  • The hernia is large, or you have cirrhosis with fluid in the abdomen, and the safest approach is unclear.
  • Different surgeons disagree about whether to use mesh, or whether to repair other hernias at the same time.
  • You were told to simply watch it, but the bulge is growing or becoming painful.

  1. How large is the defect, and does it contain bowel or only fat?
  2. Is it safe to watch this hernia for now, and what symptoms would mean I need urgent attention?
  3. Will you use mesh, and what are the advantages and risks of that for my hernia size?
  4. What is the chance of the hernia coming back, and what raises that risk for me?
  5. When can I return to lifting, work and flying after the repair?
  6. Is there any other hernia or diastasis that should be treated at the same time?

Repair of an umbilical hernia is a common, short operation and most people recover well within a few weeks. Outcomes are best when the hernia is small and general health is good. Recurrence is uncommon but is more likely with larger defects, obesity, smoking, diabetes and heavy lifting too early. Untreated hernias rarely close on their own and may enlarge, and a small number become trapped, which needs urgent surgery.

Does an umbilical hernia always need surgery?

Not always. A small hernia without symptoms can be watched. Surgery is usually advised when it causes pain, grows, or has become trapped. Adult hernias do not close on their own, so many people eventually choose repair.

Can an umbilical hernia come back after repair?

Yes, but it is uncommon. The chance is higher with larger defects, obesity, smoking, diabetes and lifting too soon. Using mesh generally lowers the risk of recurrence compared with stitching alone.

What symptoms mean the hernia is an emergency?

Sudden severe pain, a firm tender bulge that cannot be pushed back, vomiting, fever or a bulge with redness suggest the hernia may be trapped or strangled. This needs urgent medical care.

Can I fly with an umbilical hernia?

Most people can, as cabin pressure changes rarely cause problems for hernias. If the hernia is painful, hard or has been getting trapped, get it assessed before travelling.

Clinical context

Working up umbilical hernia properly

A condition like umbilical hernia is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a хирургия жкт specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or хирургия жкт specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
