Pain typically sits behind the breastbone and may spread to the arm, neck or jaw, with breathlessness. It is diagnosed from the history, an ECG, exercise or stress testing and CT or invasive coronary angiography. The pattern is stable, but a change to pain at rest or with less effort signals unstable angina, which is an emergency.
Treatment begins with medicines: aspirin, statins, beta-blockers or other drugs to prevent angina, and a nitrate spray for attacks, along with stopping smoking and controlling blood pressure and diabetes. Angioplasty with a drug-eluting stent is considered when symptoms persist despite medicines. Bypass surgery is often preferred for disease in several arteries or the left main artery. Treatment abroad is usually considered for planned procedures rather than emergencies.
- Resting ECG and any exercise stress test, stress echocardiogram or nuclear scan reports, with dates.
- Echocardiogram report showing pumping strength (ejection fraction) and valve function.
- Coronary angiogram or CT coronary angiogram images on disc, not only the written report.
- Blood results including cholesterol, HbA1c, kidney function and haemoglobin, with a list of every heart medicine and dose you take.
- A diary of how far or how fast you can walk before symptoms start, and whether they are changing.
- A stent has been recommended based on one narrowing, but you have not been told whether medicines alone could control your symptoms.
- Angiography shows several blockages or a narrowed left main artery, and you want to compare stenting with bypass surgery.
- Your angina is getting more frequent, comes on at rest or is not settling, which needs prompt medical review.
- You have diabetes or reduced heart function and different centres disagree on the best route.
- How severe are the narrowings, and which one is causing my symptoms?
- Can medicines and lifestyle control my angina, and for how long should I try them?
- Would a stent, bypass surgery or continued medicines give me the best long-term outcome?
- Which medicines will I need after any procedure, and for how long?
- What symptoms mean my angina has become unstable and I should seek emergency care?
- How will you check that my heart is protected over the following years?
Stable angina is common and usually controllable. Medicines, risk-factor control and cardiac rehabilitation reduce symptoms in most people, and stenting relieves chest pain effectively when the narrowing is the cause. Stents have not been shown to prevent heart attacks in stable disease on their own, whereas bypass surgery can improve survival in left main or multi-vessel disease, especially with diabetes. Long-term outlook depends greatly on stopping smoking, blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes control.

Do I need a stent for stable angina?
Not always. Medicines and lifestyle changes control symptoms in many people. A stent is usually considered when symptoms persist despite medicines, or when tests show a high-risk narrowing. Bypass surgery may suit multiple or left main blockages.
Can angina turn into a heart attack?
Yes, it can if a narrowed artery becomes suddenly blocked. Pain that is new, at rest, more frequent or longer-lasting suggests unstable angina and needs emergency care. Preventive medicines lower this risk.
Is it safe to fly with stable angina?
Often yes if your symptoms are well controlled, but pressurised cabins have lower oxygen levels. Carry your glyceryl trinitrate spray and medicines in hand luggage, and ask your cardiologist whether you need a fitness-to-fly assessment first.
Clinical context
A condition like отсутствие одного зуба is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a кардиохирургия specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.
Diagnostic workup, in sequence
- First-line clinical assessment
History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or кардиохирургия specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.
- Standard imaging + labs
Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.
- Specialist diagnostic workup
Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.
- Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)
Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.
When to escalate to specialist review
- New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
- Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
- Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
- A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.
Before you book international travel
- Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
- Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
- Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
- Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
- Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
