The projection is a normal part of the larynx that is generally larger after male puberty. It causes no medical symptoms, and concern is cosmetic or related to gender dysphoria. Assessment involves examining the neck profile and, before surgery, sometimes a CT scan or laryngoscopy to check the structure of the cartilage and the position of the vocal cords.
There is no medical treatment to reduce it. Surgical reduction, called a tracheal shave or chondrolaryngoplasty, is done through a small skin crease incision under general anaesthetic, shaving the cartilage down while protecting the vocal cords.
