It usually presents as a new lump, a change in breast shape, skin dimpling, nipple change or discharge, though many cancers are detected by screening mammography. Diagnosis combines imaging with a core needle biopsy, which also tests hormone receptors and HER2 status. These features guide treatment, and early-stage breast cancer has a good outlook, particularly when found through screening.

Surgery is usually the first treatment: lumpectomy conserves the breast, while mastectomy removes it, with the option of reconstruction. Radiotherapy follows breast-conserving surgery. Chemotherapy, hormone therapy and targeted drugs are chosen according to tumour type and may be given before or after surgery. Treatment is planned by a multidisciplinary team, and some patients seek second opinions or specific techniques abroad.

  • Biopsy pathology with histological type, grade and receptor results: oestrogen, progesterone and HER2, plus Ki-67 if tested.
  • Mammogram, ultrasound and breast MRI reports, with images on disc.
  • Staging scans such as CT or bone scan if advised for the stage.
  • Surgical pathology reports, margins and lymph node findings if surgery has taken place.
  • Details of chemotherapy, radiotherapy or hormone treatments given or planned, and any genetic test results.

  • Mastectomy has been recommended and you have not been told whether breast-conserving surgery is possible.
  • Receptor results are unclear, or HER2 status is borderline.
  • Chemotherapy has been advised and you want to know whether genomic testing could help decide.
  • You have metastatic disease and wish to review targeted options.
  • You are young or have a strong family history and genetic counselling has not been offered.

  1. What are my tumour's stage, grade and receptor status?
  2. Can I have breast-conserving surgery, and what is the difference in outcome compared with mastectomy?
  3. Do I need chemotherapy, and could a genomic test change that?
  4. Which hormone or targeted drugs apply to my tumour type?
  5. If I have a mastectomy, when can reconstruction be done?
  6. What follow-up and surveillance will I need?

Breast cancer outcomes are generally favourable when detected early. Five-year survival for localised disease is very high, and falls as the cancer spreads to lymph nodes and distant organs. Receptor status matters: hormone-positive tumours respond to long-term endocrine therapy, and HER2-positive tumours to targeted drugs. Triple-negative cancers are more aggressive but respond to chemotherapy. Stage, grade, age and completeness of treatment all influence results.

Do I need a mastectomy?

Not always. Many early cancers can be treated with lumpectomy plus radiotherapy with similar survival, but mastectomy may be advised for large or multiple tumours or by choice.

Can I have reconstruction?

Usually yes, either at the same time as mastectomy or later; radiotherapy plans influence the timing.

Can breast cancer come back?

It can, sometimes years later, which is why follow-up and long-term hormone therapy are used where applicable.

Do I need treatment close to home as well?

Radiotherapy and hormone treatments span months; discuss continuing care with your local oncologist.

Clinical context

A condition like рак молочной железы is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a онкология specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or онкология specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
