Pain sits over the bony bump on the outer elbow and may spread down the forearm, with weak grip when lifting a kettle or shaking hands. It follows repeated wrist use, not only tennis. Diagnosis is clinical, with pain on resisted wrist extension. Scans are rarely needed unless the diagnosis is uncertain. Most cases settle by themselves over several months to a year.

Rest from aggravating tasks, a forearm strap or brace, simple painkillers and physiotherapy with progressive strengthening exercises form the first line. Steroid injections give short-term relief but may slow recovery. Shockwave therapy and platelet-rich plasma are sometimes used. Surgery to release or trim the damaged tendon is kept for the small number with severe symptoms beyond six to twelve months. Treatment abroad is rarely needed.

  • Clinical examination notes showing pain on resisted wrist extension and tenderness over the outer elbow.
  • Elbow X-ray, to rule out arthritis or other bone problems, and ultrasound or MRI if the diagnosis is uncertain.
  • A record of treatments tried, including physiotherapy, bracing, anti-inflammatory medicines and any injections, with dates and response.
  • Details of your work or sport tasks that provoke symptoms, and how long symptoms have lasted.
  • Any neck or nerve symptoms, because pain can come from the neck or radial nerve.

  • Surgery has been suggested before a structured, progressive loading exercise programme has been tried.
  • You have had repeated steroid injections, which may delay long-term recovery.
  • Pain continues after many months and the diagnosis has never been confirmed with imaging.
  • You have numbness, tingling or neck pain, suggesting a nerve cause.

  1. Is my pain definitely from the tendon, or could a nerve or the neck be involved?
  2. Which exercises and activity changes should I follow, and for how long?
  3. Are injections such as steroid or platelet-rich plasma worth considering?
  4. When would surgery be appropriate, and what does it involve?
  5. How long until I can return to work or sport?
  6. How can I stop the problem from coming back?

Most cases of tennis elbow settle without surgery within about a year, with the right loading exercises and activity changes. Pain can last many months, which is frustrating but does not mean permanent damage. Surgery is reserved for the minority with severe symptoms despite at least six to twelve months of treatment, and most of those improve. Steroid injections may give short relief but higher recurrence.

How long does tennis elbow take to heal?

Most cases improve within six to twelve months, even without surgery, though it can take longer. Loading exercises and avoiding aggravating activity speed recovery.

Are steroid injections a good idea?

They can give short-term relief, but trials show worse outcomes at a year than with exercise therapy, and repeat injections may weaken the tendon. Discuss alternatives with your doctor.

Do I need surgery?

Rarely. Surgery is considered only after many months of properly applied non-surgical treatment have failed and symptoms are disabling.

Clinical context

Working up tennis elbow / lateral epicondylitis properly

A condition like tennis elbow / lateral epicondylitis is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a हड्डी रोग specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or हड्डी रोग specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
