The headache is often described as the worst of a person's life and may come with vomiting, neck stiffness, confusion or collapse. A CT scan of the head usually shows the blood, and CT or catheter angiography locates the aneurysm. The first days are the most dangerous because of rebleeding, and complications such as delayed brain artery spasm, hydrocephalus and seizures can follow.

Treatment aims to secure the aneurysm quickly in a neurosurgical centre. Endovascular coiling passes platinum coils through the arteries, while open clipping places a metal clip across the aneurysm neck. Nimodipine is given to reduce the risk of spasm, and a drain may be needed for hydrocephalus. Because of the urgency, the emergency treatment is given locally; rehabilitation and follow-up scans are the later stage.

  • This is an emergency needing immediate local hospital care; do not delay treatment for travel planning.
  • Once stable, keep the original CT head scan, CT angiogram or catheter angiogram images, which show the aneurysm's size and shape.
  • The hospital summary, including the grade of bleed on arrival, any drain or shunt, and complications such as vasospasm.
  • Medicine lists and blood pressure records, and details of any family history of aneurysm or kidney cysts.
  • Neurological and cognitive assessments recorded since the bleed.

  • The aneurysm has not yet been secured and you are unsure whether clipping or coiling suits its shape and position.
  • Imaging has found an unruptured aneurysm and you want to know whether treatment or monitoring is right.
  • You have ongoing headaches, confusion, weakness or seizures after discharge.
  • You have several aneurysms, or a relative has had one, and want advice on screening.

  1. Where is the aneurysm, and is it suitable for coiling, clipping or both?
  2. What are the risks and long-term durability of each approach for my aneurysm?
  3. How will you watch for delayed complications such as vasospasm or hydrocephalus?
  4. Do I need repeat angiograms to check the aneurysm stays closed?
  5. Should my close relatives be screened?
  6. What rehabilitation can I expect, and what recovery is realistic over the next months?

Subarachnoid haemorrhage is serious: a significant proportion of patients die and many survivors have lasting problems with memory, fatigue or mood. Outcome depends mostly on how severe the bleed was on arrival, the patient's age, and how quickly the aneurysm is secured and complications managed. People who arrive awake and well often recover substantially. Securing the aneurysm greatly reduces the risk of a second bleed, which is highly dangerous.

What are the warning signs of a ruptured aneurysm?

A sudden, severe headache often described as the worst of your life, with vomiting, neck stiffness, drowsiness or collapse. This is an emergency; call for help immediately.

Is coiling or clipping better?

Neither is better for everyone. Coiling is less invasive and suits many aneurysms, while clipping may suit others because of position or shape. A neurovascular team decides based on your scans.

Can an aneurysm bleed again?

Yes, especially in the first days if untreated, which is why securing it quickly matters. After successful treatment, the risk falls greatly, but follow-up imaging is usually advised.

Clinical context

Working up subarachnoid hemorrhage (ruptured aneurysm) properly

A condition like subarachnoid hemorrhage (ruptured aneurysm) is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a न्यूरोलॉजी और न्यूरोसर्जरी specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate urgently

  • Acute worsening of established symptoms — sudden chest pain, shortness of breath at rest, neurological deficit, severe bleeding, persistent high fever.
  • Loss of consciousness, severe persistent vomiting, or any focal neurological event.
  • Symptoms in the early hours of onset that fit a time-sensitive treatment window (stroke, MI, sepsis) — every hour costs outcome.
  • If you are travelling internationally for treatment and develop these symptoms in transit, divert to the nearest emergency department; do not wait to reach the planned destination.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
