Gallstones are hard deposits that form in the gallbladder from cholesterol or bile pigments. They are common, especially in women, in people over 40 and in those who are overweight, and can lead to inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis).

Many stones cause no symptoms. When they block the gallbladder outlet they cause biliary colic, a severe pain in the upper right abdomen after fatty meals, with nausea. Cholecystitis adds fever, tenderness and raised inflammatory markers. Diagnosis is by ultrasound and liver blood tests, and complications include jaundice from stones in the bile duct and pancreatitis.

Stones without symptoms need no treatment. For symptomatic stones or cholecystitis, the standard treatment is laparoscopic cholecystectomy, removal of the gallbladder by keyhole surgery, usually as a day case or with a one-night stay. Antibiotics and fluids are given first if inflammation is acute, and stones in the bile duct may be cleared by ERCP. The operation is routine, so treatment abroad is seldom necessary.

  • Abdominal ultrasound report confirming stones, gallbladder wall thickness and whether the bile duct is dilated.
  • Blood tests, usually requested during attacks: white cell count, liver enzymes, bilirubin and pancreatic enzymes.
  • Records of any admission for gallbladder inflammation, jaundice or pancreatitis, including discharge summaries.
  • MRCP or endoscopic ultrasound reports if a stone in the bile duct is suspected.
  • A list of medicines, other conditions and previous abdominal operations, plus diabetes and heart status.

  • Surgery is advised for stones found incidentally that cause no symptoms, which are often just monitored.
  • You have had an episode of jaundice, fever or pancreatitis and no bile duct imaging was done.
  • Your pain persists after the gallbladder was removed, or you are not sure the gallbladder is the cause.
  • You are older, pregnant or have other illnesses and are unsure about timing of surgery.

  1. Are my symptoms really caused by gallstones?
  2. Is there a stone in the bile duct, and does it need clearing before or during surgery?
  3. Should the gallbladder come out now, and is keyhole surgery suitable for me?
  4. What are the risks to the bile duct, and how do you reduce them?
  5. What happens if I wait, and what warning signs mean I need urgent care?
  6. Will I need diet changes after surgery?

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is among the most common operations and most people go home within a day and return to normal activity within one to two weeks. Biliary pain tends to recur once stones have caused symptoms, and complications such as inflammation, bile duct stones or pancreatitis can follow. Bile duct injury is rare. Most people feel completely well afterwards, though some notice looser stools for a while.

Do all gallstones need surgery?

No. Stones without symptoms are usually left alone. Surgery is advised once they cause pain, inflammation, jaundice or pancreatitis, because attacks tend to repeat.

Can gallstones be dissolved or passed?

Dissolving tablets work slowly and only for some small cholesterol stones, and stones commonly return. Removing the gallbladder is the lasting solution.

Is it safe to fly with gallstones?

If you are having frequent attacks, flying is a risk because help may be far away. Discuss timing with your doctor, ideally having surgery before long journeys.

Clinical context

A condition like पित्त पथरी / कोलेसिस्टाइटिस is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a जीआई सर्जरी specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or जीआई सर्जरी specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
