Causes include infection, injury, keratoconus, inherited dystrophies and failed earlier grafts. People notice cloudy or distorted vision, glare and sometimes pain. An eye specialist examines the cornea with a slit lamp, with scans to measure its thickness and shape, and checks whether the retina and optic nerve are healthy.

Early treatment targets the cause with drops, antibiotics, contact lenses or collagen cross-linking in keratoconus. When the cornea stays cloudy, a corneal transplant using donor tissue can restore sight. Full-thickness (PK) grafts replace the whole cornea, while layer-specific grafts such as DSAEK and DMEK replace only the damaged inner layer. Treatment abroad is considered when donor tissue availability is limited.

  • Detailed eye examination with visual acuity, slit-lamp photographs and the cause of corneal damage, such as infection, injury, dystrophy or swelling.
  • Corneal imaging: topography, OCT of the front of the eye, and endothelial cell count where possible.
  • Eye ultrasound if the back of the eye cannot be seen, to check retina and optic nerve.
  • Records of past eye infections, trauma, chemical burns or previous transplants.
  • Eye pressure measurements, and a list of eye drops and general medicines.

  • You were told you are blind because of the cornea, but nobody has checked whether the retina and optic nerve are healthy.
  • You are offered a full-thickness transplant, and want to know if a partial-layer transplant could work.
  • A previous graft has become cloudy or been rejected.

  1. Is my vision loss only from the cornea, and what vision can I expect?
  2. Which type of transplant suits my condition: full thickness, front layer or back layer?
  3. What is the risk of rejection, and how long will I need steroid drops?
  4. How is donor tissue sourced and checked?
  5. How long until my vision stabilises, and when are stitches removed?

A corneal transplant restores useful sight in many people when the rest of the eye is healthy, and first-time grafts in low-risk eyes do well for many years. Outcomes are poorer with severe scarring, new blood vessels in the cornea, glaucoma, repeat grafts or chemical injury. Rejection can occur years later and is treatable if reported quickly. Vision may take months to settle.

Will a corneal transplant restore my vision?

If the retina and optic nerve are healthy, it often restores useful vision. Final sight depends on the cause, the type of graft, and whether other eye problems exist.

Can the new cornea be rejected?

Yes. Rejection can occur even years later, with redness, pain, light sensitivity or blurred vision. Prompt steroid drops usually control it, so report symptoms immediately.

How long does recovery take?

The eye is often comfortable within weeks, but vision can take several months to a year to settle, particularly after full-thickness grafts with stitches.

Clinical context

Working up कॉर्नियल अंधापन properly

A condition like कॉर्नियल अंधापन is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a नेत्र विज्ञान specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or नेत्र विज्ञान specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate urgently

  • Acute worsening of established symptoms — sudden chest pain, shortness of breath at rest, neurological deficit, severe bleeding, persistent high fever.
  • Loss of consciousness, severe persistent vomiting, or any focal neurological event.
  • Symptoms in the early hours of onset that fit a time-sensitive treatment window (stroke, MI, sepsis) — every hour costs outcome.
  • If you are travelling internationally for treatment and develop these symptoms in transit, divert to the nearest emergency department; do not wait to reach the planned destination.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
