Distal Radius Fracture (Wrist)
A distal radius fracture is a break of the forearm bone just above the wrist. It is among the commonest fractures, usually caused by a fall onto an outstretched hand, especially in older women with weak bones.

عن distal radius fracture (wrist)
ما تحتاج معرفته
Pain, swelling, bruising and a visible deformity of the wrist usually follow the fall, with difficulty moving the hand. An X-ray confirms the break and shows whether the pieces are displaced or the joint surface is involved, and CT is sometimes added. Most fractures unite in six to eight weeks, but stiffness and weakness can last for months.
Stable or minimally displaced fractures are treated in a cast or splint. Displaced fractures may be manipulated back into position under anaesthetic. Unstable breaks or those entering the joint are fixed surgically, most often with a plate and screws (ORIF), or with wires. Hand therapy follows to restore movement. Treatment abroad is uncommon, since this is usually emergency care near the place of injury.
الفحوصات قبل السفر
فحوصات يجب إجراؤها مسبقاً
- Wrist X-rays from at least two angles taken at injury and after any manipulation, with dates, showing displacement and joint involvement.
- CT scan reports if the fracture involves the joint surface or is fragmented.
- A note of whether the fracture was reduced (set) and put in a cast, and follow-up X-rays showing whether the position held.
- Your age, hand dominance, occupation, and bone-health history such as osteoporosis.
- A record of nerve symptoms such as numbness in the fingers, and any open wound at the time.
رأي ثانٍ
متى تطلب رأياً آخر
- The bone has slipped after casting and surgery is being suggested, or you are being advised to accept the position.
- The fracture reaches the joint surface and you want to know whether the surface is level enough to avoid arthritis.
- You are older and a cast has been recommended despite a deformity and you are unsure whether surgery would help.
- You have ongoing numbness or pins and needles in the fingers.

التوقعات
تشخيص واقعي
Most distal radius fractures heal in about six weeks and give a functional wrist. Surgery with a plate is chosen for unstable, displaced or joint-surface fractures, and aims to restore alignment so that grip and movement recover. Some stiffness can persist, especially in older adults, and hand therapy is important. Outcome depends on the pattern of the break, quality of the bone, and early finger movement.

04 · الأسئلة الشائعة
أسئلة شائعة حول distal radius fracture (wrist)
Do all wrist fractures need surgery?
No. Stable fractures with good alignment heal in a cast. Surgery is usually considered for unstable or displaced fractures, or those that reach the joint surface.
How long until I can use my wrist normally?
Bone usually heals in about six weeks, but strength and movement take several months to return fully, helped by hand therapy.
Can I fly after a wrist fracture or fixation?
Often yes, once swelling has settled and your surgeon agrees, but a cast can tighten with swelling in flight, so timing and advice matter.
Clinical context
Working up distal radius fracture (wrist) properly
A condition like distal radius fracture (wrist) is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a جراحة العظام specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.
Diagnostic workup, in sequence
- First-line clinical assessment
History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or جراحة العظام specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.
- Standard imaging + labs
Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.
- Specialist diagnostic workup
Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.
- Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)
Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.
When to escalate to specialist review
- New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
- Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
- Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
- A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.
Before you book international travel
- Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
- Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
- Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
- Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
- Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
