Total Thyroidectomy (Cancer) সম্পর্কে
Through a collar incision in the neck, under general anaesthesia, the surgeon removes the entire gland while identifying and protecting the voice nerves and parathyroid glands. Lymph nodes in the central or side of the neck may be cleared if cancer is suspected there. Some patients then have radioactive iodine to treat any remaining thyroid tissue.
Differentiated thyroid cancers such as papillary have very good long-term outcomes when treated well. Results depend on cancer type, size, spread to lymph nodes and age. You will take thyroid hormone tablets for life, set at a level that also helps suppress regrowth. Low calcium and voice changes are the main surgical risks.
Expect around two days in hospital and about three weeks before normal activity. Bring biopsy, ultrasound and thyroid function results. If radioactive iodine is planned, ask about the isolation period and timing. At home you will need regular blood tests for hormone dose and thyroglobulin, plus follow-up neck ultrasounds.

- Ask if radioactive iodine treatment follows, as this affects travel and isolation planning.
- Plan to stay near the hospital until calcium is stable and you are on thyroid hormone.
