Small holes often cause no symptoms apart from a murmur, while larger ones cause breathlessness, poor feeding and slow growth in infants. Echocardiography confirms the size and effect on the heart. Many small holes close on their own in childhood, but large ones can strain the lungs and heart if left alone.

Small defects are monitored. Children with heart failure symptoms may be given diuretics and other medicines while growing, then need surgical closure with a patch. Some suitable defects can be closed by a catheter device. Congenital cardiac centres with paediatric expertise are often chosen for this surgery, including abroad.

  • Echocardiogram reports and images, showing the size and position of the hole and the direction of blood flow.
  • ECG and chest X-ray reports, which show effects on heart size and lungs.
  • Estimates of pressure in the lung arteries from echo or cardiac catheterisation, which determine whether closure is safe.
  • A history of symptoms such as breathlessness, poor feeding or growth in children, chest infections, or any blue colouring.
  • Records of any previous heart procedures and, for adults, any history of endocarditis.

  • You have been told the hole is too late or too high-risk to close, and a congenital heart specialist has not assessed lung pressures.
  • You are advised surgery for a small defect without symptoms or heart enlargement.
  • A device closure is proposed but the hole is in a position that may not suit a device.
  • You have an adult with a long-standing hole and signs of raised lung pressure.

  1. What type of VSD is it, how big is it, and where is it?
  2. Is it likely to close by itself, or does it need closure?
  3. Is device closure or open-heart surgery better for this defect?
  4. What do the lung pressure measurements show and does this affect treatment?
  5. What are the risks, including heart rhythm problems after the procedure?
  6. What follow-up and precautions, such as endocarditis prevention, will I need?

Outlook is generally very good. Small defects often close on their own in childhood, and many cause no lasting problems. Large defects that are closed in time usually allow normal growth and activity. Delayed closure of a large hole can lead to permanently raised lung pressures, which can make closure unsafe. Regular follow-up is advised after closure, because heart rhythm problems occasionally appear later.

Will the hole close by itself?

Small holes often close in childhood. Large holes rarely close and typically need treatment.

Is device closure possible?

For some holes, yes, through a catheter without open surgery. It depends on the position and size of the hole.

Can an adult have a VSD closed?

Yes, if there is significant shunting and lung pressures allow. Closure is not safe when lung pressures are very high.

Can I fly with a VSD?

Usually yes with a small defect. With a large hole or raised lung pressure, discuss with your cardiologist first.

Clinical context

Working up গ্লুকোমা properly

A condition like গ্লুকোমা is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a কার্ডিয়াক সার্জারি specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or কার্ডিয়াক সার্জারি specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
