The leg is painful, swollen and often deformed, and standing is usually impossible with a tibial fracture. X-rays confirm the break and its pattern, with CT used for fractures near the knee or ankle. Open fractures, where bone breaks the skin, and compartment syndrome, a dangerous pressure rise in the leg muscles, are emergencies.

Stable, well-aligned fractures, especially of the fibula alone, are treated with a cast or brace and a period of protected weight bearing. Displaced or unstable tibial fractures are fixed surgically, typically with an intramedullary nail, or with a plate and screws near the joints. Most heal in three to six months with physiotherapy. Treatment abroad is not usual for the acute injury, but may be sought for complex or non-united fractures.

  • X-rays of the whole lower leg in two views, including the knee and ankle joints, on disc, not only reports.
  • CT scan, if the fracture extends into the knee or ankle joint.
  • Details of whether the fracture was open (through the skin), including wound care and antibiotics given.
  • A record of circulation and nerve function in the foot, and any signs of compartment syndrome, such as severe tightening pain.
  • Medicines, smoking status, diabetes and any previous bone problems that affect healing.

  • Surgery has been advised for a stable fracture that might heal in a cast, or a cast has been advised for an unstable one.
  • The fracture is not healing after several months, or the bone has become angled or short.
  • Your wound is red, draining or painful, suggesting infection after an open fracture or operation.
  • The fracture involves the knee or ankle joint, and you want advice on how to restore the joint surface.

  1. Is my fracture stable, and where does the break lie?
  2. Do I need surgery, or will a cast or brace give a good result?
  3. If surgery is advised, would a nail or a plate be best for this fracture?
  4. When can I start walking and putting weight on the leg?
  5. What are the risks, such as non-union, infection and knee pain?
  6. What signs of complications should I watch for, and who should I contact?

Most tibia and fibula fractures heal within three to six months, though complicated or open fractures can take longer. Surgery with a nail or plate allows earlier movement and generally gives reliable healing. Delayed or failed healing is more likely with open fractures, smoking, diabetes and infection. Many people return to normal activity, but some have lasting knee or ankle stiffness and occasional pain over the implant.

Will I need surgery for a broken shin?

Not always. Stable, well-aligned fractures may heal in a cast or brace. Unstable, displaced, open or joint-involving fractures usually need a nail, plate or screws.

How long will it take to heal?

Typically three to six months, sometimes longer for open or complicated fractures, and for smokers or people with diabetes.

Can I fly after a leg fracture?

Flying is usually possible after the initial swelling settles, but a cast can restrict circulation on long flights. Ask your surgeon about timing, blood-clot prevention and mobility help.

Clinical context

Working up tibia / fibula fracture properly

A condition like tibia / fibula fracture is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a অর্থোপেডিক্স specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or অর্থোপেডিক্স specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
