People struggle to follow speech even in quiet and may need loud volume, lip-reading or text. Causes include genetic conditions, infections such as meningitis, noise, ototoxic drugs and ageing. Diagnosis uses hearing tests (audiometry), speech testing and, in children, newborn screening and brainstem response tests, with MRI or CT to assess the ear and nerve.
Powerful hearing aids are tried first. When speech understanding remains poor, cochlear implantation is the main treatment: electrodes placed in the cochlea stimulate the hearing nerve directly, and an external processor is fitted after healing. Early implantation in children supports speech and language development, and rehabilitation is essential in all ages. Some patients travel for implants and mapping follow-up.

Does a cochlear implant restore normal hearing?
No. It provides electrical stimulation of the hearing nerve, which the brain learns to interpret over months. Many people understand speech well, but sound quality differs from natural hearing.
Will I lose any remaining hearing?
Surgery can reduce residual hearing in the implanted ear. Soft-surgery techniques aim to preserve it, so discuss this if you have useful low-frequency hearing.
How long does treatment take?
The operation takes a few hours, the processor is switched on a few weeks later, and tuning and rehabilitation continue for months.
Can I fly with a cochlear implant?

Before you book international travel

- Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
- Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
