Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (DUB)
Heavy menstrual bleeding is excessive monthly blood loss that interferes with daily life. When no structural cause is found it is called dysfunctional uterine bleeding and is often due to hormonal imbalance.

Women describe soaking through pads or tampons hourly, passing large clots, flooding or periods lasting over seven days, and may become anaemic and tired. Assessment includes a pelvic examination, blood count and thyroid tests, and pelvic ultrasound, sometimes with hysteroscopy or biopsy, to exclude fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis or endometrial changes.
First-line treatments are the levonorgestrel intrauterine system, tranexamic acid and anti-inflammatory tablets, or the combined contraceptive pill, with iron for anaemia. If medicines fail and childbearing is complete, endometrial ablation destroys the uterine lining and reduces or stops bleeding. Hysterectomy is the final option. Ablation is a short day procedure, so treatment abroad is rarely necessary.
