It is often seen on antenatal scans or at birth. Babies may have feeding difficulty, ear fluid with hearing problems, and later speech and dental differences. A specialist team assesses the child from birth and follows them through childhood. Most children do very well with staged care.
The usual pathway is feeding support first, then lip repair at around three to six months and palate repair at around nine to twelve months. Later steps may include speech therapy, ear care, orthodontics, bone grafting of the gum and sometimes nose or jaw surgery in the teens. Families sometimes consider treatment abroad for a team with extensive cleft experience, particularly where such care is limited locally.

When is the lip and palate repaired?
Lip repair is commonly done at around three to six months and palate repair at about nine to eighteen months, though timing varies by team and by your child's weight and health.
Will my child's speech be normal?
