Spasticity in cerebral palsy is persistent muscle stiffness caused by brain injury early in life. It limits movement, comfort and care.

The muscles resist stretching, producing tight limbs, scissoring legs, painful spasms and in time fixed joint contractures or hip problems. It is assessed by examination using scales such as the Ashworth or Gross Motor Function classification, and by watching how a person moves. The brain injury itself does not progress, but stiffness can worsen with growth if not managed.
Treatment begins with physiotherapy, stretching, splints and positioning. Oral muscle relaxants such as baclofen can help. Botulinum toxin injections relax specific muscles for a few months. For severe, widespread spasticity, an intrathecal baclofen pump delivers medicine directly around the spinal cord at a low dose. Orthopaedic surgery corrects contractures and hips, and selective dorsal rhizotomy suits certain children. A team plan is individual.

Working up cerebral palsy / spasticity properly
A condition like cerebral palsy / spasticity is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a নিউরোলজি ও নিউরোসার্জারি specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.
Diagnostic workup, in sequence
- First-line clinical assessment
History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or নিউরোলজি ও নিউরোসার্জারি specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.
- Standard imaging + labs

- Symptoms in the early hours of onset that fit a time-sensitive treatment window (stroke, MI, sepsis) — every hour costs outcome.
- If you are travelling internationally for treatment and develop these symptoms in transit, divert to the nearest emergency department; do not wait to reach the planned destination.
Before you book international travel
- Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
