Paediatric bone marrow transplant replaces a child's diseased blood-forming system with healthy donor stem cells. It is used to cure conditions such as thalassaemia major and sickle cell disease.
The child first receives conditioning chemotherapy to clear the diseased marrow, then stem cells are given through a drip. The donor is ideally a matched brother or sister, but a matched unrelated, cord blood or half-matched family donor may be used. The child stays in an isolation room while the new cells grow, usually over two to four weeks.
